ELECTIONS

The members of the Newton County Election Commission conduct all general elections and special elections at both the federal, state and county levels, based on the election laws of Mississippi. Overseeing the election system includes:

  • Voter roll maintenance
  • Qualification of local candidates
  • Appointment of poll managers
  • Approval of ballots and testing of voting devices
  • Conducting elections
  • Certifying election results

The members of the Newton County Election Commission are:

  • District 1: Nancy Kidd-Smith
  • District 2: Cindy Alexander
  • District 3: Lesia Taylor
  • District 4: Amy Hollingsworth
  • District 5: Carol Youngblood

The commission may also be contracted to assist the Democratic and Republican parties with primary elections, in advance of the General Election. Candidates from the primary elections are qualified by their party’s executive committees. The winners from the primaries of each party then advance to the General Election, along with any Independent candidates who have been qualified by the county’s election commission.

In the primaries, voters may vote for the Republican candidates or the Democratic candidates, but not both. In the General Election, all the candidates for each office face each other.

Newton County Election Commissioners are, from  left, Nancy Kidd-Smith, Cindy Alexander, Lesia Taylor, Betty Wall and Carol Youngblood.
