MARRIAGE LICENSES
The Newton County Circuit Clerk’s Office issues licenses for marriage. The information below will help you be prepared when you come to our office. Please bring all required documents with you.

The Marriage License Application form includes the questions you will be asked when applying for a marriage license. In order to simplify the process, you may complete this form and bring it with you when you are applying.

Requirements for a Marriage License
- Both parties must be present together in order to apply.
- A fee of $37 will be required.
- Both parties must be at least 21 years of age. If under 21, you will need your parents or legal guardian to be present with you at the time of application. Parents/Guardian will need to have photo IDs. All parties must be present at the same time if a minor is making application for a marriage license. The minimum age at which minors may apply is 17 for a male and 15 for a female. Application must be made in the county in which the female resides.
- Both parties will need to provide proof of age, such as a driver’s license, birth certificate, state issued ID card, school record, passport, life insurance policy, baptismal record or military ID.
- If either or both applicants have been divorced within six months of the date of application, a divorce decree must be provided.
After the marriage license has been issued, it is the responsibility of the applicants to make arrangements with a minister or other official with authority to perform marriage ceremonies.
Certified Copies of Marriage Licenses
For anyone requesting a copy of a marriage license, the requirements are:
- A fee of $17 for the first copy and $6 for an additional copy ordered at the same time.
- If appearing in person at our office, payment can be made by cash, money order, certified check, personal check or credit card. If using a credit card, a $1 service charge will be applied. The copy/copies can be obtained at the time the service is rendered.
- Requests made by mail must be accompanied by a money order, certified check or a personal check. The request must include the names of the applicants at the time they applied for the marriage license and the date the license was issued, if possible. Please provide a phone number, in case we have questions. Also provide a mailing address.
