The City of Newton

With a population of 3,373, Newton is the largest city in Newton County and is situated on Interstate 20, making it a convenient stopping place for travelers. Downtown is anchored by the historic Newton Depot, and major employers include La-Z-Boy and the ESCO Division of Weir.  Newton is also home to the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The Town of Chunky

The town of Chunky was named after a Choctaw game called tchungkee.  The town has a population of 300 and is located on the Chunky River. Chunky was incorporated in 1861 and is governed by a mayor/board of alderman form of government. The City of Union

Union is situated in both Newton and Neshoba counties. It was incorporated in 1906 and has a population of 1,963. Located on Highway 15, it includes a medical community anchored by Laird Hospital. The Town of Hickory

Incorporated in 1860, the town of Hickory is named for Andrew Jackson, whose nickname was “Old Hickory.” Jackson passed through the area on his way to fight the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. The Town of Lake

The Town of Lake is actually located in two counties—Scott and Newton, with the majority of the residents living in Scott County. Lake is located on Highway 80 and was incorporated in 1867.
