NEWTON COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT

Circuit Courts in Mississippi hear felony criminal prosecutions and civil lawsuits. The state has 22 Circuit Court districts, and Newton County is in District 8, along with Leake, Neshoba and Scott counties. Two judges, Mark Duncan and Caleb E. May, serve District 8. All Circuit Court judges in the state are selected in non-partisan elections for four-year terms.

To assist in the judicial process, the circuit clerk serves as the clerk of the Circuit Court. The office receives and files lawsuits, indictments, motions and other related papers in all civil and criminal cases filed. The clerk also issues subpoenas and keeps a record of all judgments and executions.

The clerk also:

  • Keeps a general court docket, in which all names and parties in each case, pleas, indictments and records from lower courts on appeal are entered.
  • Keeps orders of the court, which are referenced in the minutes book.
  • Enters a full and complete record of the proceedings of a suit.
The bridge known as the “Ole Rattling Bridge” is located just south of Chunky and spans the Chunky River.
